A Legacy Since 1928
The Alfalfa Foundation
A definitive moment in our history as Alvi van der Merwe officially purchases the Alfalfa Estate, laying down the physical and value -driven roots that would define our family's future for generations to come.
The First Herd
The legacy truly begins to take shape with the introduction of the very first dairy herd to the estate, establishing the core agricultural focus that has remained at the heart of our operations ever since.
The Turning Point
Alfalfa Yvonne becomes the South African Dairy Cow Champion, setting the standard for 'excellent genetics'.
Establishing the Plant
Bertie van der Merwe and his father, Alvi van der Merwe, established Alfalfa's dairy processing plant after the milk corporation, Vanessa, went bankrupt. The Van der Merwes agreed to stand surety for the corporation in exchange for their delivery book, license and debt.
50th Anniversary
A milestone year celebrating five decades of processing excellence in the South African dairy industry.
The Third Generation
Bertie's two sons, Johan and Alvi, are currently the owners of Alfalfa Dairy. As the third generation on the farm, they continue to build on the foundation laid by their grandfather in 1928, pairing the same original values with the latest industry technology. We keenly await the coming of age of the current generation of van der Merwe sons.
Renewable Energy
Powering a More Sustainable Future
At Alfalfa Dairy, sustainability is more than a commitment, it is built into the way we operate every day. By harnessing the power of the sun, we generate clean, renewable energy that supports efficient production while protecting the environment and enhancing animal welfare.
Our solar energy systems currently supply over 28% of Alfalfa Dairy’s total electricity consumption, significantly reducing our dependence on conventional power sources. This renewable energy solution enables us to convert sunlight into reliable electricity without emissions or noise, creating a calmer and more comfortable environment for our cows.
With an installed alternative energy capacity of approximately 160 MW, Alfalfa Dairy generates an estimated 1,400 MWh of clean energy annually, resulting in a meaningful reduction in CO₂ emissions and overall environmental impact. These efforts are supported by a 1,000 kW battery standby system, ensuring consistent, reliable operations while maximising the benefits of our green energy infrastructure.
As part of our long-term sustainability strategy, we are actively exploring and implementing additional alternative energy solutions. With current and planned development, which includes but is not limited to the construction of a 15 million litres capacity bio digestor.
Alfalfa Dairy aims to source up to 60% of its total energy consumption from renewable energy, reinforcing our role as a forward-thinking leader in sustainable dairy farming.
By investing in renewable energy today, Alfalfa Dairy is helping build a cleaner, more resilient future for our business, our communities, and the planet.
